We’ve been told a lie: that doing more at once makes us more productive. With the flurry of end-of-summer demands, we might try to text while walking, listen to a podcast while answering emails, and ‘half-listen’ to our kids while planning dinner. But trying to do everything at once often means doing nothing well.
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” – Ecclesiastes 3:1 (ESV)
The wisdom of Ecclesiastes reminds us that life is meant to be lived in seasons and moments. There is a time for work and a time for play, a time to be silent and a time to speak. This implies a focused presence. When it is time to work, work. When it is time to be with your family, be with them. Multitasking divides our attention, increases our stress, and robs us of the joy of being fully present in the moment God has given us. True effectiveness comes not from doing more things at once, but from doing one thing at a time with our whole heart.
Action Steps:
Prayer:
God, grant me the clarity to do one thing at a time. Help me resist the urge to multitask and instead be fully present in each moment. Teach me to honor the season You have placed me in today. Amen.
