There is a line between being ‘busy’ and being ‘buried.’ With the influx of back-to-school forms, supply lists, activity sign-ups, and farewell-to-summer events, overwhelm is the heavy feeling that we are drowning in our commitments, unable to come up for air. It’s a place of anxiety and exhaustion, and it’s a signal that something needs to change.
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30 (ESV)
Jesus’s invitation is for those who are tired and carrying heavy burdens. He doesn’t promise a life with no work or responsibility, but He offers a different way to carry it. The “yoke” He speaks of was a wooden harness that joined two oxen together to pull a load. When we are yoked to Him, we are not pulling the weight of our lives alone. Overwhelm often comes from trying to manage everything in our own strength. Jesus invites us to trade our crushing, self-imposed yoke for His, which is perfectly fitted and shared with Him.
Action Steps:
Take out a piece of paper and write down every single thing that is making you feel overwhelmed right now – consider school preparations, new schedules, end-of-summer deadlines, and any lingering summer projects. Don’t filter it; just get it all out.
Read through the list and circle the top three things that are causing the most stress.
Ask yourself: “Which one of these can I give to God right now?”
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, I am weary and heavy-laden. I feel the weight of my schedule and my worries. Today, I accept Your invitation. I lay my burdens down at Your feet and ask to be yoked with You. Lighten my load and give my soul rest. Amen.
