Unhurried Day 10: Living a Focused Life

The opposite of a busy life isn’t an empty life; it’s a focused one. After these ten days of reflection, the goal is not just to do less, but to live with more intention, pouring our precious time and energy into the things that truly matter for eternity.

“Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 3:13-14 (ESV)

Paul says, “one thing I do.” His life had a singular focus. He was able to forget the distractions and failures behind him and press on toward the one thing that mattered most. What is the “one thing” for your life? When you know your ultimate goal, it becomes much easier to decide what deserves your time and what is simply a distraction. A focused life is free from the clutter of non-essential commitments. It is a life lived on purpose, for a purpose, and it is the ultimate antidote to chronic busyness.

Action Steps:

  1. Take 15 minutes to answer this question in a journal: “What do I want to be remembered for by my family and by God?”
  2. Write a short, one-sentence “mission statement” for your life based on your answer. (e.g., “To love God, love my family well, and use my gifts to serve others.”)
  3. Place this sentence where you will see it often as a reminder of your true focus.

Prayer:

God, thank You for this time of reflection. I don’t want to go back to a life of frantic busyness. Grant me a clear vision of what truly matters. Help me to live a focused life, pressing on toward the prize of knowing and serving You. May all my days be lived for Your glory. Amen.
