Unhurried Day 1: The Badge of Busyness

As summer activities end and new school routines begin, we often answer the question “How are you?” with a sigh and one word: “Busy.” It has become a statement of importance, a way to signal our value in a fast-paced world. But is this the life we were designed for? Today, let’s challenge the assumption that a full calendar equals a full life.

“And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.” – Genesis 2:2-3 (ESV)

The very first story in Scripture ends with rest. Before sin, before the fall, before the frantic pace of human living, God established a rhythm of work and rest. He didn’t rest because He was tired; He rested to model a complete and healthy cycle. When we treat busyness as the ultimate goal, we neglect a core part of our design. We chase exhaustion, believing it proves our worth, when God Himself showed us that holiness includes stopping. What would it look like to see rest not as a weakness, but as an act of faith?

Action Steps:

  1. Find a quiet place and set a timer for five minutes.
  2. Sit in complete silence. No phone, no music, no to-do lists.
  3. If your mind wanders to your schedule, gently guide it back to the present moment. Just be.

Prayer:

Father, forgive me for glorifying busyness. Help me release the need to prove my worth through my activity. Teach me to value the sacred gift of rest that You modeled for me from the very beginning. Amen.
